How to Sign Up for Be My Eyes: Volunteer and User Guide
Signing up for Be My Eyes takes minutes. Step-by-step for blind/low-vision users and sighted volunteers, plus tips for your first call.
Getting started with Be My Eyes takes a few minutes. You sign up either as a blind/low-vision user (to get help) or as a sighted volunteer (to give it). Here's how both paths work.
Signing up as a blind or low-vision user
- Download the app from the App Store, Google Play, or Microsoft Store.
- Open it and choose "I am blind or have low vision."
- Create your account with your name, email, and password, and pick your language.
- That's it — you can immediately request a volunteer, try Be My AI, or browse Specialized Help.
Signing up as a volunteer
- Download the app the same way.
- Choose "I want to volunteer."
- Enter your name, email, and password, set your location, and select the languages you can help in.
- Wait for your first call. You'll only get notifications between 8am and 9pm your time.
You must be at least 17 years old for either role.
What happens on your first call
Don't overthink it. As a user, just point your camera at what you need help with and explain the task. As a volunteer, you'll see the user's camera feed and hear their voice — describe clearly, speak naturally, and ask if they need anything else before hanging up. Most calls last two to five minutes.
Tips for a smooth start
- Good lighting helps a lot. If it's dark, the volunteer can ask you to turn on your phone's flashlight — the app has a button for that.
- Move the camera slowly. Give the volunteer (or the AI) a steady view.
- Be specific. "Read the expiry date on this carton" gets you an answer faster than "what is this?"
- Rate your calls. The quick rating after each call helps the app stay high quality.
